What is Jyotish?

Jyotish (also known as Jyotisha) is the traditional system of astrology that originated in ancient India. The word Jyotish comes from Sanskrit, meaning “science of light.” It is one of the six Vedangas—ancient disciplines connected to the Vedas—and is considered a sacred science that helps understand the influence of celestial bodies on human life and the natural world.

Jyotish is as old as the Vedas and it is mentioned in the Vedas and many classical texts such as Vishnu and Shiva Purana as well as in Bhagvat Gita.Jyotish helps us in identifying our mental-emotional states and also the resources we have at our disposal. Likened to a horse contained in a paddock, it helps us to see the nature and flexibility to move in the paddock, our free will or lack of it.
